Year 11 Places of Worship Trip
As part of their Religious Studies, Year 11 students attended a Places of Worship trip to Jamyang Buddhist temple in Kennington and St Paul’s Cathedral. This was a time to explore different symbols and rituals and what they mean to a religious person and how they help them to practice their faith.
Please read the following account from one the students who experienced the day:
We visited a Buddhist Temple where we sat inside a meditation hall that had statues of Buddha, paintings and offerings. We spoke to a lady who told us about what the symbols in the hall represented, how the Buddha lived his life and how he reached enlightenment. We were then allowed to independently explore the temple and indulge our own curiosities.
After exploring the Buddhist Temple we visited St Paul’s Cathedral and had a task of finding different religious symbols such as the altar, paintings and the baptismal font, where you get baptised. We were able to explore the Cathedral of our own accord and learn things you would not discover in a classroom lesson.
The visits to both the Cathedral and Temple were amazing and a great educational experience, as it taught us about how different religions worship and how contrasting they are to each other, which will really help with our GCSE exam. Shantel A, 11 Bow
