Here at Wren Academy we completely agree with the ethos of World Book Day, to make reading fun, relevant, exiting and accessible to all, because reading has the power to change lives.  That is why we celebrated this day on Thursday 7 March.

This year we chose the theme Fairy Tales in the 21st Century, so several staff came dressed as a favourite fairy tale character.

The day started with a Pointless style quiz (see below) for Tutor Groups to enter.  No Tutor Group got the Pointless answer, so the joint winners were B4 and W5 who got the answer with the least points.  The question is, which country do each of these fairy tales originate from? Can you get all the correct answers?

At the beginning of each lesson in Years 7-9 a short modern tale was read in instalments.  This helped students realise that fairy stories are still being written today.  In their English classes that week, Year 7 and 8 students completed leaf shaped reviews (in their house colours) to be added to the Library Trees.

At break and lunch times throughout the week, students could enter the Fairy Tale competition in the Library and swap their World Book Day token for one of the specially produced £1.00 WBD books (they can also use them in bookshops for a better variety of the £1.00 books or get £1.00 off any other book).  There were special reading lists on display, plus a selection of fairy tale books on display to borrow.

There were 30 entries for the Fairy Tale Competition, which was to guess the fairy tales from 12 clues (also see below). 15 of the 30 entries got all 12 answers correct and the three students whose names were drawn from the winning entries were Marissa M, 7 Walbrook, Sasha K, 7 Walbrook and Layla Z, 7 Walbrook. They each won a book.
