The Cambridge National in Sport Studies will encourage students to:
Students will gain an understanding and learn how to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of Sport Studies. Students will also develop practical skills that can be applied to real-life contexts and work situations. Students will develop the ability to think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically.
Students will develop independence and confidence in using skills that are relevant to the Exercise, Physical Activity, Sport and Health sector and more widely. The course aims to develop students' knowledge of the contemporary issues in sport. It will also look to develop students' skills and techniques required to perform in sporting activities and will give them the tools needed to lead a session in a selected sport. It will further develop students’ teamwork and understanding needed to participate in an Outdoor Adventurous Activities.

If you enjoy taking part in PE and or sport and wish to develop knowledge and understanding through practical involvement, then this is a good course for you. R185 is the practical component of the course and is geared towards developing students' ability to perform in two different sports and evaluate performance. The students will also need to deliver a coaching session which will enable them to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Students will learn about the Olympic creed, sporting values, Performance enhancing drugs, technology in sport and will develop a new outlook on sport which is unit R184. The third unit is R187 which is Increasing awareness of Outdoor Adventurous Activities where students will go on a high-ropes course and orienteering so that they gain a deeper appreciation for Outdoor Activities. What kind of student is suitable for this course? |
The course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills established in Key Stage 3 Physical Education. Any student with an interest in PE and Sport, or who enjoys the subject, is suitable to study a Cambridge National Sports Studies. You should have an interest in physical education and sport, enjoy being active and appreciate the benefits of keeping fit and healthy. The methods of assessment are varied, ranging from an online test, to performance videos, to PowerPoint presentations. All assignments have a real life setting attached to them. It will give you exciting opportunities to be involved in a number of different physical activities such as high ropes and leading a coaching session and will look at promoting a healthy lifestyle.

This course can open a wide range of opportunities which may include further training in areas such as physiotherapy, occupational health, psychology, sports development, leisure and recreation management, coaching, officiating, the fitness industry, the armed forces and the Civil Service.
The course develops key, transferable skills that employers are looking for which can lead to a wide variety of employment opportunities. Key skills include the ability to meet deadlines, to stay organised and on top of evidence which would be a crucial part of further studies and or work.

In this exam assessed unit students will develop a wide breadth of knowledge which will enable them to have a greater understanding of the wider impacts sports can have. The topic areas are: 1: Issues which affect participation in sport. 2.The role of sport in promoting values 3. The implications of hosting a major sporting event for a city or country 4. The role National Governing Bodies (NGBs) play in the development of their sport 5. The use of technology in sport | This unit consists of students being assessed in two sport activities (either two individual sports, two team sports, or one of each). Students would evaluate their performance in these activities. In this unit students will also be assessed on organising, planning and leading a sport session and will evaluate their performance on their leading of the activity. | In this unit students will develop an understanding of the importance of OAA and its place on the curriculum and will learn about the equipment required to compete in a variety of activities. They will also become more aware of the barriers faced by users and will consider the risks involved. Students will have to participate in two outdoor adventurous activities. |
