The Rationale for the Content and Sequence of what we Teach

Year

Why we Teach this Content and how the Content and Sequence of Topics Benefits our Students

Year 12

To give students the best opportunity to come to terms with a new subject.  To make good progress with the syllabus and to teach this in a way that enables their knowledge to grow and develop.  Course starts with units where students relate to their own expressions, education and family.

Year 13

To complete the syllabus.  As above, in terms of confirming the student's understanding of Sociology and the workings of society.  Developing the necessary exam skills is also built into the ordering.

Key Stage 5 (KS5) only:

What exam board/syllabus do you teach?

AQA

Why have you chosen this syllabus?

AQA was chosen as this has the best resources available and the clearest structure with regards to student progress.

Curriculum Implementation

The subject specific habits and behaviours we develop (or intend to develop) in our students

Subject Specific Habits and Behaviours

How we embed these in our students

Discussion of controversial topics.

Evaluating different viewpoints about controversial topics.

Understanding differnet perspectives on how society is organised or indeed if society is a real thing.

Discussions in lessons. Weekly focus on debate topics and how these relate to different areas of the course:

  • Questioning of students
  • Frequent class debates
  • Lots of work evaluating sociologists viewpoints

Academy Ethos

Academy Curriculum Intent

How our department’s curriculum content and teaching approaches reflect the whole Academy ethos

A Curricular and Pastoral commitment to Micah 6v8: Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God.

High Expectations of students’ behaviour for learning, learning progress and respect for our community.

A commitment to make learning enjoyable, engaging, relevant and challenging.

A commitment to develop knowledge, skills and character.

Consistency and fairness in approach and routines.

Excellent and developing subject knowledge which inspires confidence in students.

Effective collaboration across all parts of the Academy.

Highly skilled teaching which deepens understanding and stimulates curiosity.

A willingness to embrace research and innovation in order to enhance the learning potential of our students.

Recognising and rewarding effective use of learning habits as well as academic achievement.

Social justice is a key element of all social debates, from discussions on the impact of capitalism, ethnicity and patriachy on society to reason for differences in educational achievement and criminal offending rates.

We always expect the best from our students in terms of ther learning. Getting student to take personal responsibility for their learning is a big part of this.

Lessons are planned to be engaging. Without engagement the quality of learniong decreases.

As an examined subject, knowledge is clearly key. Without a development of knowledge and an understanding as to how the areas link to each other there can be no understanding.

Teachers have great experience. Each uses their own approach which leads to consistancy and fairness.

All Sociology teachers have great experience and an excellent knowledge of the course. Any new to teaching Sociology are well supported by the team.

Social Sciences cover fopur A Level subjects and we continually share good practice. We colaborate regarding students who are under achieving.

The department has used Teams well. Ideaqs from CPD are implemented, such as retrieval practice.

Effort and Learning habits are recorded on the students' termly reoprts. Students are encouraged to develop their independent learning skills.
