Year 8 option for study in Year 9

It is the aim within Music lessons, first and foremost, for all students to enjoy music.  Within lessons, the emphasis is on practical music making, allowing students to broaden their own interests, knowledge and awareness of music, as well as realise their own potential.  We aim to encourage transferable skills such as collaboration, perseverance, self-confidence, self-motivation and self-evaluation.

This course aims to:

The three main skill areas covered within music are:

  1. Participation in the performance of music; either individually or in an ensemble, providing the opportunity for all students to achieve a standard of musicianship through an enjoyable experience.
  2. Composition and improvisation; using an appropriate medium to create and develop an appreciation of sound. This will include the introduction of new technology software to enable students to gain a deeper understanding of the compositional process.
  3. Development of listening skills; analysing recorded and live performances, identifying instruments, compositional devices and traditions.

Year 9 Music will aim to:

  • Build on technology skills in composition, focusing primarily on how music can reflect different moods, intentions and images.
  • Explore and refine different compositional techniques.
  • Develop and understanding of basic harmony in composition.
  • Build on incorporating a more complex structure into composition work.
  • Further develop ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Further explore the work of different musicians and have an understanding of how different historical events influence music.
  • Develop an extensive musical vocabulary.

Topic areas covered will include The Blues, Film Music, Performance Skills and Song Writing, as well as having individualised tasks in which students can apply their own interest and specialism.

Why study?

Music provides unique experiences through a variety of styles and idioms.  It fulfils a vital role in education due to its concern with many aspects of a child’s personality; physical, emotional, perceptual, intellectual and aesthetic.  As well as being a particularly fun and varied subject to study, Music gives you skills that you will need in all kinds of careers.  Research shows that Music students are better equipped to comprehend Mathematical and Scientific concepts.  Listening skills will enhance the aural perception needed in learning new languages.  Performing skills will give you confidence in public speaking, useful if you intend to pursue, for example, Drama, Politics or Law.

What career options are opened up by the course?

Music opens the door to all sorts of careers that are not necessarily directly linked to Music.  Here are just a few of the Music specific careers that Music students go into:

Composer - Music for film, TV programmes, advertising, internet, video games etc... Teacher - Classroom music or instrumental lessons Music Producer - Recording music and managing sound equipment in TV, radio and film studios. Musician - Playing for orchestras, pop groups. Music Therapist - Using Music to treat various health conditions.
