Drama as a Year 9 Option

Drama

Year 8 options for study in Year 9

Year 9 Drama will directly prepare students for studying GCSE Drama as well as developing many of the transferable skills that the subject offers.  The curriculum will include a variety of thematic and text based work.  Lessons will be practical and collaborative with a focus on developing as performers as well as becoming more adept at analysing drama through verbal and written mediums.

This course aims to:

  • Allow students to work imaginatively and creatively in collaborative contexts, generating, developing and communicating ideas.
  • Consider and explore the impact of social, historical and cultural influences on drama texts and activities.
  • Develop and demonstrate competence in a range of practical, creative and performance skills.
  • Actively engage students in the process of dramatic study in order to develop as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds.

We will be studying:

Students will learn the conventions and techniques of Drama and Theatre through a number of exciting, creative and challenging topics.  They will study the process of characterisation in depth, learning how to create and sustain a believable character on stage.  We will use Drama as a vehicle to explore current issues, such as social media, as well as looking at plays, for example Blood Brothers written by Willy Russell.  Students will also learn a variety of genres and the leading practitioners in the theatre.  They will have the opportunity throughout the year to create performances over a longer period of time understanding how to bring theatre to life and develop skills in technical theatre and design as well as acting.  Students will work in a production team to devise a Theatre in Education performance in the Summer Term, learning the skills of research and collaboration to prepare for a final performance to a target audience. They will also begin to learn the written analysis skills needed for GCSE Drama and BTEC Performing Arts, including evaluation of live theatre.

Why study?

Students should study Drama:

  • If they aspire to be creative and reflective learners.
  • If they want to develop their knowledge of Drama and Theatre as a medium of expression.
  • If they want to improve collaborative group skills.
  • If they want to develop confidence and communication skills.
  • If they have an interest in watching and evaluating creative work.

What career options are opened up by the course?

Drama opens up a variety of options in the world of work.  GCSE Drama and BTEC Performing Arts can lead to a specific career choice in the Arts including a performer, set designer, theatre manager, presenter, drama therapist, teacher, producer, director or a journalist.  Drama is seen as a valuable asset for many other jobs too.  Drama teaches the essential life and work skills of communication and confidence, also linking to any form of public speaking or presentation involved in a career.  Drama develops the skills needed to work collaboratively and interact with members of the public.
