Step Up Programme – New College, Oxford University

We are thrilled to have been selected to be one of only ten schools in the country to be invited to participate in the innovative Into Oxbridge Step Up programme.

A representative from New College, one of the most prestigious Oxford colleges visited Wren on Monday 9 October to work with a group of Year 11 students. His aim was to start preparing them to be able to apply successfully to Oxford University in the future. This first visit introduced our students to the history of Oxford University with its ambiguous start date, and explained how it has become a world leading university. Most importantly he dispelled some of the myths which might prove a barrier to students applying in the future. They learnt about a number of Oxford Alumni, discovering that the university is not just for those who went to a public school but also for people of all backgrounds.

Our success over the years in supporting students getting into Oxbridge institutions has taught us that the earlier students start to prepare themselves, the greater their chances of being selected. This is why we are excited that the Step Up programme will support our Year 11s throughout this year and also when they progress into the Wren Sixth Form. This will mean that they are given expert advice over the next two years which will equip them to engage in the rigorous academic preparation required. Students will be provided with personalised subject related support and take part in a range of activities which build cultural capital so they are in a strong position to write personal statements, take assessments and then excel in the interviews. They will also spend time visiting Oxford colleges as part of the process.

This programme is a fantastic opportunity for all the students involved, and will create a blue print for Oxbridge preparation for the year groups that follow.
