Refer-Wren-Dum Posted: 22/06/16

Polling DayAs the nation prepared itself for “a decision of a generation”, we felt it only right to enfranchise the Wren community as far as electoral law permitted. And so the “Refer-Wren-Dum” was born. Assemblies became the scenes of eloquent debate, reflection on key themes and the opportunity to ask questions. Our campaigning teams made videos and posters, whilst circulating campaign stickers. Spokespersons from Years 7-10 had the opportunity to convince the Academy community of the merits of both sides of the discussion, and maintained a positive tone not always present amongst their national counterparts. Our congratulations go to all students involved in the campaigns for engaging our community in such a positive manner.

On the morning of Thursday 23rd, to coincide with the national vote, Wren Academy went to the polls. Prefects and volunteers efficiently carried out the roles of electoral officials, registering voters, counting ballots and ensuring the “Refer-Wren-Dum” was free and fair. There were no opinion polls beyond anecdotal evidence, so we had to wait until the final count was published.

Turnout was high, with 848 votes cast in total, but this is where the parallels with the national vote end. 72% of the Wren Community voted to “Remain a member of the EU”. These results were announced to tutor groups on the Thursday afternoon, with “Graciousness in defeat, humility in victory” becoming the theme of Friday’s assembly. I appreciate that this issue has divided the nation but feel happy that the “Refer-Wren-Dum” engaged our students with the democratic process, and helped prepare them for their future roles in democracy. Thankfully there were no resignations following the verdict.
